Cook grasps in after Pietersen wicket

cricketAlastair Cook gritted his teeth and bedded in for the long haul on the third morning at Durban, as he compiled a gutsy half-century to settle England’s innings after the early dismissal of his overnight partner, Jonathan Trott. Cook went to the break on 75 not out, having added 44 runs to his overnight 31 in an attritional session in which Kevin Pietersen was the other big wicket to fall, pinned lbw by Paul Harris while sizing up an ambitious sweep.

In the final half-hour before lunch, Cook began to open his shoulders and go for his shots, cracking Harris out of the attack with a brace of fours through the off-side, before rocking back in his stance to pull Morne Morkel through square leg. But until that late flurry (which was punctuated by a reprieve from the third umpire on 64 when a catch at short leg was shown to have flown straight off the pad), he opted to survive entirely on his wits. Yuvraj Singh ruled out of series

cricketIndian batsman Yuvraj Singh has been ruled out of the ongoing one-day international series against Sri Lanka because of a finger injury. Yuvraj had picked up the injury while fielding during the second Twenty20 in Mohali and was subsequently unavailable for the first two ODIs.

He has been advised rest for the next two matches of the ODI series after aggravating the worrisome finger and his participation in the forthcoming tri-series in Bangladesh remains in doubt. Yuvraj returned to the starting XI for the third ODI in Cuttack yesterday and scored 23 from 40 balls as India took a 2-1 lead in the five-match contest. (more…)

Strauss looks to build England reply

cricketGraeme Swann chiselled away with skill and diligence to claim a richly deserved five-wicket haul, but South Africa’s lower-order took the honours on an attritional second day at Centurion. They made light of the early loss of their overnight stalwarts, Jacques Kallis and JP Duminy, to grind out a competitive first-innings 418 on a pitch that offered little of the spice it had promised in the build-up to this match. By the close, England had overcome a jittery new-ball spell to reach 88 for 1 in reply, with Andrew Strauss and Jonathan Trott unbeaten in an 63-run stand for the second wicket. (more…)

No. 1 India fly Asia flag in year of Excitement

cricketMahendra Singh Dhoni’s India ended 2009 as the number one Test side in the world, but the militant attack on Sri Lanka’s players in Pakistan changed cricket’s landscape in Asia.

The horrifying attack which injured seven Sri Lankans and eight locals as armed militants opened fire on the team bus in Lahore on March 3, saw security dominating the agenda for the rest of the year.

The attack, the worst on sportsmen since the massacre of Israeli athletes by Black September guerrillas at the Munich Olympics in 1972, ensured Pakistan was blacklisted as a major cricketing venue. (more…)

Kotla was too dangerous

cricketBreaking his silence on the Ferozeshah Kotla pitch fiasco, Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara said the track did not look “normal” soon after the first five overs and was too dangerous to continue playing.

“Even after 6-10 overs, we could feel that the pitch was not normal. But the Match Referee (Alan Hurst) said ‘I cannot do anything. It was a call for the on-field umpires to take’.

“We spoke to the fourth umpire as well. We cannot, from outside, make a request to the umpire. The two on-field batsmen had to make a request,” Sangakkara said after his team returned from India losing both the Test and ODI series.

“The umpires were also waiting to see whether the pitch would improve. By the 23rd over, they knew that it did not even out. Then (Muthumudalige) Pushpakumara got hit and (Thilina) Kandamby nearly got hit,” he told reporters. (more…)

Watson is soft

cricketContinuing his verbal spat with Shane Watson, the West Indies skipper Chris Gayle described the Australian all-rounder as “soft” and someone who can be provoked easily.

Watson had justified his wild celebration on dismissing Gayle in the third cricket Test, saying the batsman had been baiting him so he was excited after taking his wicket.

Watson was fined 15 per cent of his match fee over the incident but did not regret his conduct. (more…)

Not in front of the kids

Sri Lanka England CricketKevin Pietersen had to ask foul-mouthed spectators to stop swearing in front of children during England’s tour of South Africa.

Pietersen has generated a mixed reception from home crowds back in his native country for a Test tour which moves to Durban’s Kingsmead for the second match of four on Boxing Day.

The mercurial batsman has regularly made it clear he has no problem with crowds booing and whistling at him. But he thinks swearing in front of children is beyond the pale.

“The only thing that I don’t like is when people swear and abuse you with swearing when there are kids around,” he said.

“That’s happened a couple of times, and I’ve had to ask a few stewards to speak to people concerned.

“You can say what you like. But when there are kids around there’s no need to swear. That’s poor.” (more…)
