ODI win to get India closer to No.1 spot

cricketFresh after claiming the number one Test spot, India can narrow the gap with ODI table-topper Australia if they win the one day series against Sri Lanka but they also risk going down the list if they lose the five-match series starting in Rajkot on Tuesday.

In the individual rankings, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has to perform very well to defend the number-one spot in batting list while Yuvraj Singh can return to the top-three and Virender Sehwag can regain a top 10 spot with some stellar performance in the series. (more…)

I don’t rate India a long-term No.1

cricketFormer Australian captain and leading commentator Ian Chappell has said India don’t have the resources to retain their No.1 spot in the ICC Test rankings for a long enough period to emulate Australia and the great West Indies teams of the past. Chappell said that India’s batting alone will not sustain them and to do so, they will have to unearth a couple of champion bowlers.

Chappell and former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar aired their views in Time Out, Cricinfo’s new fortnightly audio show hosted by the leading commentator Harsha Bhogle. India bagged the top ranking from Australia after beating Sri Lanka 2-0 in the three-Test series at home last month. India jumped from No. 3 to No.1 for first time since the rankings came into place in May 2001. (more…)

Butter-fingered Indians work on fielding

cricketLooking to make up for their fielding lapses in Nagpur, the Indian team, which takes on Sri Lanka in the second and final Twenty20 International here on Saturday, toiled hard on Friday with some new drills included in their practice session.

Eyeing to level the two-match Twenty20 series after paying a heavy price in the first match due to sloppy fielding, Dhoni’s men devoted nearly an hour to improve this department of the game.

The newly appointed fielding consultant Mike Young worked with the team and made them do some interesting drills, which the players seemed to enjoy.

He called the players first in batches while some others were doing their batting practice session. (more…)

Badrinath And Mithun Joined In India Squad

Del113523Karnataka fast bowler Abhimanyu Mithun and Bengal wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha have been included in the 15-man squad for the first Test against South Africa in Nagpur on February 6. Tamil Nadu batsman S Badrinath has also been called up to bolster a team that lost Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh to injuries sustained in Bangladesh.

Dravid, who fractured his cheek bone after getting hit by a Shahadat Hossain bouncer in Mirpur, was advised three weeks’ rest, while Yuvraj was also ruled out of the series against South Africa.

Sreesanth, who picked up a hamstring injury in Chittagong and missed the second Test against Bangladesh, was also not in the squad. (more…)
