Katich slips on 99 and Clarke follows

cricketKemar Roach woke West Indies from their morning of slumber by sending Ricky Ponting for x-rays and removing the dangerous Shane Watson, but the Australian innings was still in good health at 1 for 217 at tea. In the second session Ponting was struck on the left elbow second ball, staying until he was 23 before retiring hurt, while Watson missed a century again when caught behind for 89.

Ponting headed for a Perth hospital shortly before the tea break for a precautionary x-ray that showed no bone damage and he will be available to bat again later in the day if required. (more…)

Watson is soft

cricketContinuing his verbal spat with Shane Watson, the West Indies skipper Chris Gayle described the Australian all-rounder as “soft” and someone who can be provoked easily.

Watson had justified his wild celebration on dismissing Gayle in the third cricket Test, saying the batsman had been baiting him so he was excited after taking his wicket.

Watson was fined 15 per cent of his match fee over the incident but did not regret his conduct. (more…)

Watson defends emotional celebration

India Australia CricketAustralian all-rounder Shane Watson insists he is not embarrassed by his behaviour during the third Test against the West Indies at the WACA.

He claims he had been provoked by opposition skipper Chris Gayle ahead of the celebration which cost him 15 per cent of his match fee.

Watson has drawn plenty of criticism for his reaction to his dismissal of Gayle in the second innings of the third Test, stamping joyously on the ground and staring at the West Indian skipper while celebrating with his team-mates.

While he admits his actions were over the top, he does not believe he embarrassed himself and said that it was just a reflection of his passion. (more…)

Ponting warning to offenders

cricketRicky Ponting has demanded a greater level of discipline from his team in the future after three team members were reported for their conduct.

Tempers flared on day two when West Indies bowler Sulieman Benn bumped into Mitchell Johnson mid-pitch, and then Johnson’s batting partner Brad Haddin got heavily involved as plenty of words, pushing and pointing was exchanged.

In the end, Benn was suspended for two one-day internationals after pleading not guilty, and Haddin and Johnson were fined 25 and 10 per cent of their match payments respectively. (more…)

Ponting demands better behaviour from team

77566918MN034_Second_Test_AThe controversy-filled third Test between Australia and the West Indies at Perth saw three Australian players reported to the match referee and fined varying percentages of their match fees – and that fact has not gone down well with Ricky Ponting.

Ban for Benn, Johnson, Haddin escape with fine

cricketWest Indies spinner Sulieman Benn was handed a two-ODI ban while Australia’s Brad Haddin and Mitchel Johnson were let off with fines after being found guilty of conduct contrary to the Spirit of Cricket.

The players were involved in an ugly altercation on the second day of the third cricket Test between the two team.

“West Indies spinner Sulieman Benn has received two suspension points while Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson have been fined 25 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively,” an ICC release said. (more…)
