South Australia sustained Australia’s gloomy start to the Champions League Twenty20 cricket tournament in India with a defeating 50-run loss to South Africa’s Warriors in Hyderabad on Sunday, September 25.The Warriors, who crushed the Redbacks in the semi-finals of last season’s tournament, scored 5-171 after winning the toss. The Redbacks’ track never got any momentum, as they lost wickets at regular intervals and finished at 6-121.

Redbacks’ skipper Michael Klinger told, we were a little out of our depth tonight, they just played the conditions a lot enhanced than us tonight. It was a second realistic loss in as many days for the 2 Australian rep. in the ten-squad tournament, after NSW lost by seven wickets to South Africa’s Cape Cobras in Chennai on Saturday. The Warriors’ triumph was set up by a swashbuckling 88 runs off 65 balls from opener Jon-Jon Smuts. Big-hitting Smuts blasted 10 fours and 2 sixes and controlled the innings, after Ashwell Prince was bowled by Shaun Taiti (1-53 off 4) in the second over.

Smuts added 73 for the second wicket with Colin Ingram (30 off 24) and 80 for the third with wicketkeeper Mark Boucher (34 off 26). Only part-time medium pacer Daniel Harris (2-23 off 4) and the clever changes of speed from Daniel Christian (2-24 of four) were able to hold the Warriors.Tom Cooper (3 off 5) and Daniel Harris (4 off 5) both fell in the first three over’s to Lonwabo Tsotsobe (2-30 off four), and the Redbacks never really improved, slumping to 5-70 in the 11th over.

Skipper and opener Michael Klinger (34 off 29) and Christian (26 not out off 28) offered the only actual resistance. The Redbacks play the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Hyderabad on Tuesday, whereas the Blues face Trinidad and Tobago in Chennai on Wednesday.Scores: Warriors 5-171 (Jon-Jon Smuts 88, Daniel Christian 2-24, Daniel Harris 2-23) after 20 over’s. South Australia Redbacks 6-121, Michael Klinger 34, Lonwabo Tsotsobe 2-30). Warriors triumph by 50 runs.
