New Zealand bowled out for 234

vettoriThree wickets each by Mutthaih Muralithara and Rangana Herath helped Sri Lanka bowl New Zealand out for just 234 runs in the first innings of the second Test on Friday.

Resuming Day 3 at 159/5, New Zealand succumbed to the pressure of the spin duo and started losing wickets early-on.

Ross Tylor, who was unbeaten on 70 at stumps of day 2, could only add 11 more runs to his kitty before giving a simple catch to the first slip off Herath.

Oram (24) and Vettori (23) tried their best to tackle the spinners but they too did not last long.

Once they got out, Kiwis lost the remaining batsmen in a huff and were ultimately skittled out for a paltry 234.

Earlier in the match, riding on a fine century by Thilan Samaraweera, Sri Lanka had scored 416 in their first innings.

Kiwis in Trouble After Samaraweera’s Ton

thilan-samaraweeraNew Zealand suffered early setbacks after Thilan Samaraweera scored a second successive century to surpass 1,000 runs this year during the second cricket Test today.

The tourists, replying to Sri Lanka`s first innings score of 416, lost two quick wickets as they struggled to 51-2 by tea on the second day at the Sinhalese Sports Club.

Tim McIntosh was given out leg-before to fast bowler Dammika Prasad for five and Daniel Flynn was caught behind off left-arm seamer Thilan Thushara for 13.

Martin Guptill was unbeaten at the break on 29 and Ross Taylor was on two with the tourists needing 166 more to avoid a follow-on.

Samaraweera, who made 159 in the first Test at Galle which Sri Lanka won by 202 runs, hit 143 on way to becoming the second batsman after England captain Andrew Strauss to complete 1,000 runs this year.

The right-hander has so far scored 1,058 runs in eight Tests in 2009 with two double centuries among his four three-figure knocks. Strauss, in comparison, has 1,071 runs from 12 matches.

Samaraweera hit 17 boundaries and celebrated his 11th Test century in 54 matches by smashing the next ball from seamer Iain O`Brien over the square-leg boundary for six.

Strong Sri Lankan bowling worries Vettori

Daniel Vettori has said he’s aware it is not only Sri Lanka’s spinners that his side will have to be wary of, but also the quick bowlers who were instrumental in the Test series victory over Pakistan.

“Spin is going to play an important part but I think from watching the Pakistan series, the seam bowlers have played an important role,” Vettori told reporters after arriving in Sri Lanka for a six-week tour. “Our ability to counter the Sri Lankan spin bowlers is going to be a huge part of the game. However it will be ignorant for us not to acknowledge how well the Sri Lankan team has bowled.” (more…)

Pick Dravid for Lanka Tri-Series, Urges Rajput

Coach of India’s World Twenty20 winning team of 2007, Lalchand Rajput, has urged Indian selectors to include former skipper Rahul Dravid in the one-day team for the tri-series in Sri Lanka in September as he is still a big asset to the team.

“I am happy that Dravid has been included in the probables’ list of 30 players by the Indian selectors, headed by Krishnamachari Srikkanth. He still has a lot to offer and I personally believe that he should not have been dropped from the one-day squad in 2007 in the first place. He is one of the fittest sportsmen I have come across and his experience will be invaluable to the team,” Rajput told Cricketnext on Tuesday.

“Being one of the best players of spin bowling in the world, he will be a big asset to the team while countering spinners like Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis and Daniel Vettori on spin-friendly wickets in Sri Lanka. I think chief selector Srikkanth should be complimented for bringing Dravid back into the one-day fold because I am sure he (Srikkanth) must have been impressed with Dravid’s showing in the Indian Premier League (IPL),” Rajput added. Sri Lanka Vs West Indies T20 Semi Final

Kumar Sangakkara’s side posted 158-5 from their 20 overs, and New Zealand’s run chase slowly petered out after a fast start.

The Black Caps were bowled out for 110 in the 17th over despite looking to be on course after a powerful performance in the six-over powerplay at the start of their innings.

Sri Lanka spinner Ajantha Mendis was named man-of-the-match after another stunning spell, finishing with figures of 3-9 off his three overs.

It was a heartbreaking story for England. They tried hard, but could not move into the semifinals. In a rain-interrupted match, West Indies beat England by 5 wickets (D/L method) to enter the semifinals.
