England-Australia T20 Match Abandoned Due to Rain

England-Australia-cricketHeavy rain forced the first of two Twenty20 internationals at Old Trafford between England and Australia to be abandoned on Sunday.

Australia notched up 145 for four wickets from their 20 overs and had reduced the hosts to four for two before rain intervened.

The visitors found themselves 54 for three but Cameron White smashed 55 from 36 balls and added 78 for the fourth wicket with captain Michael Clarke who compiled a watchful 27 not out.

White, dropped on 12 by debutant Joe Denly, made 55 and shared a fourth-wicket stand of 78 with Michael Clarke, Australia’s captain in the absence of the resting Ricky Ponting.

The duo came together after England captain Paul Collingwood took two wickets in three balls to leave Australia struggling at 54 for three in the ninth over. (more…)

Pietersen to miss Twenty20 Champions League in India

kevin-pietersenEngland batsman Kevin Pietersen, recuperating from a surgery on his achilles heel, will miss the USD 6 million Twenty20 Champions League in October in India.

Pietersen`s name was missing from the 20-man list provided by his IPL franchise, the Bangalore Royal Challengers — to the Champions League organisers yesterday, according to reports.

The paper claimed Pietersen feared criticism from English authorities if he risked his fitness in Champions League.

The flamboyant batsman, who missed almost half of the Ashes series against Australia because of a surgery on his heel last month, will now have to wait until England`s tour of South Africa in November to resume playing cricket.

Paul Collingwood, selected by the Delhi Daredevils, has admitted he was still unsure if he would play in the tournament.

Flintoff Recovering Well After Surgery

flintoffFlintoff, 31, underwent a routine arthroscopy and micro-fracture to two small areas in his right knee in London on Monday night.

The recovery period from the operation, carried out by surgeon Andy Williams, is anticipated to stretch into 2010.

He will concentrate on being a limited-overs specialist when he does return to action but has urged England to live up to their potential following npower series success against Australia.

“We’ve won the Ashes, fantastic, but if lessons can be learnt from the past, it is now is the time to try to dominate as a Test team,” Flintoff said.

“We’ve got the players to do it, we’ve got the captain to lead us, and it’s a realistic goal.

“Enjoy this celebration, get it out of the system, and then move on.

“Almost be Australia-like in the way they have gone about it – they have won series in the past and continued to beat people. There are a lot of challenges in front of the team, but with what we’ve got we can live up to it.”

Flintoff can concentrate on family life for the immediate future after his creaking right knee held up long enough to allow a second successive home Ashes triumph. (more…)

andy-flower-englandEngland regained the Ashes yesterday with a 197-run success at The Oval giving them a 2-1 series victory.

And Flower told a press conference in London today: “I’m very proud of our guys, they did a brilliant job over the series and came back from a tough position on a number of occasions.

“But we have got a long way to go as a side, we are still number five in the world and we’ve got a long way to go to be where we want to be.”

Flower continued: “We did some good things in the West Indies, bonding, and started this season well.

“I thought we were in with a chance against Australia but I knew we were underdogs. Australia have been the best team in the world for a long time but we knew we had a chance and we’ve taken it. (more…)

Andrew Strauss is a Hero – British Press

englandashesverybig2408England cricket captain Andrew Strauss was hailed as a hero in the British press after leading his team to victory, while questions were raised about Australian skipper Ricky Ponting`s future.  England defeated Australia by 197 runs at The Oval on Sunday in the fifth and final Test with more than a day to spare, to regain the Ashes 2-1.

Under headlines reading “THRASHED `EM” and “The Ashes are home,” British newspapers celebrated the victory on their front pages, many with photographs of Strauss holding the coveted urn as his teammates sprayed champagne.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain said the close relationship between Strauss and coach Andy Flower had been crucial to England`s performance throughout the Ashes series.

And he said Strauss, who took over from batsman Kevin Pietersen in January, had gone from strength to strength during the summer against Australia. (more…)
