All results remain possible as New Zealand and Pakistan head into the final day of their three-Test series.

The hosts appeared to have taken control of the decider in Napier when they took a 248-run first-innings lead.

But a patient display saw Pakistan’s top four all make half-centuries as they reached 347 for four by the close of a rain-hit day four – 99 runs ahead with six wickets intact.

Openers Imran Farhat – who carried his bat for 117 not out in his side’s first innings of 223 – and Salman Butt resumed on an unbroken stand of 128. (more…)

Vettori, McCullum steer New Zealand ahead

cricketDanish Kaneria spun a web around the New Zealand batsmen to leave the Test hanging in the balance at tea on the second day in Napier. New Zealand’s progress was slow, at times it was painstaking, but for a team that collapsed for 99 last week, they had done well to reach 88 for 2 at lunch before Pakistan roared back into the game.

Tim McIntosh’s defiance was the primary feature of the morning session but Kaneria eventually broke his resistance and that of several others as well after lunch. Kaneria was allowed to settle into a rhythm because of New Zealand’s defensive approach and it was his googly that caused batsmen the most trouble. Unlike in the past, when he was guilty of overusing it at times, Kaneria was more prudent in deploying the wrong one today. He concentrated on building pressure with his bouncing leg breaks and sliders and bowled a variety of deliveries that slowly suffocated the batsmen. (more…)

Kiwis dominate Pakistan at Napier

cricketIain O’Brien and Daryl Tuffey bowled New Zealand into a dominant position in the deciding Test against Pakistan in Napier.

Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf opted to bat after winning the toss but was grateful for a near single-handed effort from opener Imran Farhat, who carried his bat to finish 117 not out in a total of 223.

O’Brien, in his final Test match, ripped through the top order with a spell of four for 15 in eight overs in the morning session and Tuffey had the last four batsmen caught behind.

New Zealand openers Tim McIntosh and BJ Watling then put on 47 before bad light ended play. In a frantic morning session, Farhat and opening partner Salman Butt put on 14 before the latter was bowled playing across a Tim Southee inswinger. (more…)

Vettori to bat at No.6 in final test

cricketNew Zealand captain Daniel Vettori will bat at No.6 to accommodate an extra bowler on a pitch that is likely to offer some assistance to the seamers.

“We’ve heard there’s going to be a little bit more moisture and greenness so hopefully that brings the seamers into play a little bit more,” paceman Daryl Tuffey said.

“I just had a brief discussion with Mark Greatbatch, we’ve got our heads round it,” Vettori said. “I’ll be batting at No.6, and we’ll play the extra bowler in this time. We’re tossing it up between going with four seamers, or three seamers and two spinners.” (more…)
