Chris Cairns the former New Zealand cricketer has urged Ricky Ponting to retire from the game and also called him ‘Elephant in the Room’. He also urged Cricket Australia to end his 16-year Test career, as he feels that the retirement of Ponting is the best way forward of Australian cricket.
The 41-year-old New Zealand all-rounder Chris Cairns said that, it is time for Ricky Ponting to retire, as he could not have two years with an average of 27 at No.3 position. He also recalled the Australian greats Marl Taylor, Ian Healy and Mark Waugh, as they were told about their time. He also called Ponting an elephant in the room at the moment in Ricky Ponting and nobody is addressing him. He also feels that, Ponting should retire after the second test against New Zealand in Hobart.
However, he insisted not to take him wrong and said that, he has utmost respect for Ricky Ponting, but there is a place and time. He also suggested that, the second Test at Hobart is right time and place for him. He added that, Australian selectors need to make a hard call on Ponting who will turn 37 soon. He further dished that, as per him Australia is an uncompromising cricket nation, but he feels the decisions being made have been compromising in the past couple of years.
He went on saying that, Ponting was allowed to keep going, due to his stature in the game. But at the end of the day, Australia has always been about the best team. He is behind Don Bradman the Australian greatest batsman and they are managing it. Cairns insisted that, Australia has got rebuilding to do.
