International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that, the highly anticipated Test Championship has been postponed until 2017. It was announced by Haroon Lorgat on Monday. He said during the IDO between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Dubai, he is afraid that it no longer happens in 2013.
He further said that, they decided at the last ICC board meeting that the first opportunity to play the test championship is 2017. He went on saying, he is disappointed over it not going to take place sooner, but it is due to their commitments they have got through 2015. They even tried to switch ODI Champions Trophy to make the Test Championship happen, but was not possible. The announcement would be a blow to test cricket, which is already struggling to draw the crowds, against the popularity of Twenty20 cricket.
The commitments of ICC include a contract with their official broadcaster ESPN STAR Sports, through to the end of the ODI World Cup in 2015 and contracts with sponsors. The contracts were agreed based on an ODI cricket event in 2013, which will now be the Champions Trophy. The Broadcasters and sponsors see more potential for recouping the money spent on the ICC contracts.
Lorgat also said that, they attempted to form the world test championship, which he thinks would have been a very good context in ensuring the importance of test cricket, but then again they have to wait for 2017 to see it taking a reality form. Conducting a World Cup of test cricket has never been possible, as the length of five-day games have made it difficult to organize.
