Australia, the reigning number one ODI team has bested South Africa in the first ODI of the ongoing ODI series at Centurion. The Kangaroo team has comprehensively defeated the Proteas with a margin of 93 runs.
The touring team Australia was at 96-1 in 19 overs, after they have been put into bat by South Africa, when rain interrupted, followed by violent thunderstorms and as a result, the game was delayed by four hours. The proceedings of the first ODI continued, after the match has been curtailed to 29 overs per side. The Aussies were out on the ground to bat and scored 187-4 from 29 overs, reduced as per Duckworth Lewis method.
South Africa was given the target of 223 from 29 overs as per Duckworth Lewis method. But, they failed to get close to the target and eventually ended up at 129 all-out in just 22 overs with 7 overs remaining. The Proteas got an early blow in the form of not in touch Graeme Smith, after he got out in the fifth delivery of the match, after Doug Bollinger got him in front of the wickets. The standby Captain Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis, took the score to 40 without any hiccups, until he was bowled by Pat Cummins for 15 runs. He also got Duminy for 4 runs and ended up with the figures of 28-3 in 3 overs, after he got Botha hit-wicket.
Ricky Ponting, the former Captain of Australia played a vital role by anchoring with his 63 runs off 77 balls, who was well supported by his newly appointed Captain Michael Clarke, who scored 44 runs off 48 with five fours and two sixes, while Ponting sent the ball to the fence for nine times. Mr. Cricket Mike Hussey scored 30 runs off 21 balls with 3 fours and 1 six with a strike rate of 142.86. Overall, the Australian team gave a clinical performance and would be eyeing to clinch the series, by winning the next match, which would be played at St. George’s Park in Port Elizabeth on Sunday, October 23, 2011.
