Sri Lanka were in tatters against Australia in the second Test of the three match series at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Sri Lanka on Thursday, September 8, 2011, as the host were bowled out for 174 in the first innings with Angelo Mathews has score fighting with the tail Andres to score 58 in first innings.Kumara Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews, as the pair put together 52 runs for the sixth wicket partnership. The former failed to convert his innings into a big one though and got out after scoring 48. Sangakkara failed to live up to the expectations of his side, as he got out after a steady knock.
Earlier, the hosts had opted to bat first after winning the toss. The team’s skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan expected his batsmen to bounce back in the series after a dismal show in the opening Test match.This was not the case though, as the Lankan top-order struggled to get going once again. They blamed the pitch last time, as it was terrible for any form of cricket. However, the Pallekele wicket was perfect for batting. It did have a little assistance for the bowlers, but conditions were very much playable unlike Galle.
Sri Lanka’s opening pair of Tharanga Paranavitana and captain Dilshan was yet again disappointing. They were unable to make an impression in the previous match and failed to going this time around as well.Paranavitana was the first man to be dismissed in the innings after failing to open his account. He was followed by his skipper, who managed just 4 runs in his short stay at the crease.Stylish middle-order batsman Mahela Jayawardene was unable to rescue his side from trouble, as he contributed just 4 runs to the total before being brilliantly held by Michael Hussey in the gully region.
