Australian skipper Michael Clarke admitted his team had set high with its crushing triumph against Sri Lanka in the first one-day international.
Australia romped to a comfortable seven-wicket victory against the Sri Lanka – 2011 World Cup finalists and the man-of-the-match bowling presented to the left-arm quick Mitchell Johnson in his 100th ODI in Kandy in a dazzling start to its five-match series.
Johnson stated a one-day career best 6-31 – including the key wickets of Kumar Sangakkara (16) and Mahela Jayawardene (3) to split through Sri Lanka’s vaunted batting squad and help send away the home team for 191 inside its 50 over’s.
A quick batting 69 off 51 balls by Shane Watson set Australia on top before Clarke (53 no) and former skipper Ricky Ponting (53) put mutually a hundred stand to guide the tourists to 3-192 after 38.1 overs and a obvious triumph.
But, in spite of the strong display, Michael told the victory by itself would prove nothing and Australia had plenty to prove on its visit.
Aside from the excellent batting effort and Johnson’s display with ball, there was also an underline for Brett Lee (1-33) when he joined Glenn McGrath as the only Australian bowler to claim 350 or more one-day international wickets.
While it was all enchantment for Australia squad, but the mood was different for Sri Lanka skipper Tillakaratne Dilshan.
The five-match series next match will be at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Stadium near the southern port city of Hambantota on Sunday, August 12, 2011.
