England sealed a fifth straight series victory on Monday, through a mixture of Kumar Sangakkara’s intensity and the return of heavy rain at the Rose Bowl.
Although being held to a frustrating draw in the third Test against Sri Lanka, Sangakkara (119 runs) rediscovered his flawless touch to strike a maiden century on English ground as the hosts, who resumed with a lead of 82 runs and with three top-orders Sri Lankan wickets came up short.
Rain cleaned out the session after tea-break, with the Sri Lankans finishing on 334-5 with a lead of 141 runs.
However, the England giants captured the series with 1-0 and look to be in ultimate shape going into the team’s second series of the summer against No.1-ranked India starting next month.
Sri Lanka lost just two wickets earlier with the Rangana Herath (36 runs) and then Sangakkara in those first two sessions and Thilan Samaraweera (87 runs not out) and Prasanna Jayawardene (6 runs not out) were left unbeaten.
More than 150 over’s were lost in the opening three days of a rain interrupted test.
In the end, the Sri Lankans’ impressive second-innings fall down in the first test in Cardiff, which lost them the match by an innings and 14 runs. They have proved to be the significant event of the series.
