Sri Lankan pacer Latish Malinga stunned the Sri Lankan cricket authorities by announcing his sudden retirement from the Test Cricket citing ‘long-standing degenerative’ knee injury as a reason for his move.
Malinga currently giving his services for Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL IV season took the early retirement from the Test cricket having ahead of his Country’s long tour of England which also includes 3 Test matches; made Sri Lankan cricket authorities to envisage the speedster’s decision as awkward which came in the wrong time.
However, the 27 year old admits his decision is to make his stance for the ODIs as well as T20 formats long standing otherwise which he could face a career-threatening injury yet again which he faced during Australia tour in 2008. The injury he faced in February 2008, during the visit to Australia made him to be away from the game for almost 16 months.
Meanwhile, his retirement has risen one more critical point for the Lankan authorities as they are now have chance to think about the speedsters consideration for IPL Vs Test Cricket. Given a chance, it could be envisaged as Malinga has time and strength to play for IPL but not for his country duties.
Addressing even that issue, Malinga says he is ready to play the other two formats of the game ODI as well as T20 but not for Tests only to make his stance long standing.
Malinga, the fastest bowler from Sri Lanka till date, is also offered to go through the rehabilitation program by returning from the IPL IV as soon as possible. But the speedster continuing with the league could hurt SLC more.
