India justifies their tag of favorites in the ICC World Cup 2011. India defeated Australia by five wickets in second quarter final game on 25th March, 2011 at Ahmedabad.
The match between India and Australia is what the crowd expected to witness in the knock out stages. It was not a high scoring game, but still there a lot of nerves and character was tested. Australia made one change their playing eleven; Michael Hussy comes in place of Steven Smith. India has also made one change silencing all the rumors Virender Sehwag was in and Yusuf Pathan was left out. Both the teams wanted win the toss and to bat first, Australia won the toss and decided to bat first.
Aussies started their innings with Shane Watson and Brad Haddin, the pair has provided decent start to the innings by adding 40 runs for first wicket. Shane Watson (25) looked threatening as he was middling the ball sweetly until he missed the ball of Ashwin that hit the timber. Brad Haddin and Ricky Ponting studied the innings and Haddin (53) was removed by Yuvi. The Australian middle order batsmen were disappointing as key players like Michael Clarke (8); Michael Hussey (3) and Cameron White (12) were dismissed cheaply.
Ricky Ponting (104) made his 30th ODI century; he was dismissed to Ashwin in hunt for some quick runs. David Hussey (38) fired up in the batting power play which guided Aussie to reach 260 runs.
Indian bowling attack, Dhoni had different game plan for the World Champions. Ashwin started the proceedings for India and looked pretty impressive. Zaheer bowled magnificently with the older ball as the ball started reversing, he was unplayable. Yuvraj Singh can’t be out of action. Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh and R Ashwin have shared two wickets each.
India came to chase down 261 runs, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag looked so composed and pretty confident from the outfit. Sachin Tendulkar completed his 18000 ODI runs, Sehwag (15) was departed to bouncer by Watson. Sachin (53) complete his fifty and soon edged one to Haddin in the bowing of Tait. Gambhir and Sachin consolidated the innings Gambhir also reached to his fifty. Virat Kholi (24) was looking solid and got out to full toss of David Hussey. Soon Gambhir (50) was also went back to pavilion, there were many mix-ups with Yuvraj Singh and finally dismissed in the form of run out.
Dhoni joined Yuvraj, but didn’t last long at the crease. Brett Lee got rid of Dhoni (5); he went after a wide one ball and hit it straight to Michael Clarke at point. Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh stayed composed and held their pressure to register win against Australia. Yuvraj scored unbeaten 57 and Raina remained not out on 34, sealed victory with five wickets and 14 balls remaining.
Australian bowling attack, all the bowlers proved to be touch expensive and had no joy bowling to quality batting attack. The fast bowling trio of Aussie could not able produce magic, Brett Lee, Shane Watson, David Hussey and Shaun Tait shared a wicket each.
Yuvraj was the man of the match for his 57* and two wickets, this is his fourth trophy of the ICC World Cup 2011. India will face their rivals Pakistan in semi finals at PCA stadium, Mohali on 30th March, 2011.
