Defending champions have continued their dominance by defeating Canada with seven wickets in Group A World Cup fight on 16th March, 2011.
Australian openers Shane Watson and Brad Haddin put on 183 runs for first wicket and it is a record opening stand for Australia in World Cups. The previous best was 182 was held by Rick McCosker and Alan Turner in 1975 World Cup against Sri Lanka. The openers come back for Australia and made their ride easy.
Ireland has won the toss and elected to bat first, they had an electrifying start to their innings with dashing half century by Hiral Patel (54). Canada were cursing along ten runs per over in the initial overs. Canada captain Ashish Bagai (39) and Zubin Surkari (34) have added 68-run partnership for the third wicket. Shaun Tait and Brett Lee have a furious comeback second spell where they rattled the Canada batting attack.
Shane Watson have picked up the important wicket of Hiral Patel, Patel got to his fifty in just 37 balls and looked some threatening. Australian pace attack looked worried to go at him. John Davison 40-year-old has played his last match for Canada as he announced his retirement. Jason Krejza who went wicket less in last three games has added two wickets to his wickets tally in the World Cup. Brett Lee bagged four wickets; Shaun Tait and Jason Krejza have got two wickets each. Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson have settled with one wicket each.
Australia started their innings 212 to win the game; their opening pair who broke the record of best opening stand for Australia in World Cup has done most of the job. Shane Watson (94) came from just 90 balls, which includes nine fours and four sixes. Shane Watson hit the tournament longest six of 104 meters. His partner Brad Haddin (84) has dominated things right from the start of the match. Brad Haddin innings includes eleven four and two sixes.
Australian skipper Ricky Ponting was the only man to miss out in the match, Ponting (7) was out in the bowling of Henry Osinde. Michael Clarke and Cameron White finished the Australian innings. Australia won their 34th match in a row in World Cup with this win.
