Gautam Gambhir will lead the Kolkata Knight Riders team in fourth edition of Indian Premier League. Gambhir was the costliest pick in the auction of IPL 4 in January 2011; KKR franchise has bought him for $2.4 million.
Gautam Gambhir has played for Delhi Daredevils in the first three editions and he also lead the Delhi team in the last edition of IPL. Sourav Ganguly has remained unsold in the auction, he lead the KKR team in first three seasons of IPL. There is no better alternative for the franchise to pick Gautam Gambhir as the captain of Kolkata Knight Rider.
Gautam Gambhir has captained team India in recent one day series against New Zealand in the absence of regular skipper MS Dhoni. India has whitewashed the series with 5-0 lead. Kolkata Knight Riders have issues over captaincy in the season of 2009, where they decide to rotate the captains. Finally, Brendon McCullum has lead KKR throughout that season. The record of Kolkata in IPL was very poor; they ended up in sixth place in first and third edition and in second season they finished at the bottom of the table.
Gambhir said that KKR franchise has bought a terrific team for this season of IPL by picking world class players and strong hitters. The KKR team has big names of Yusuf Pathan, Jacques Kallis, Eoin Morgan, Shakib Al Hasan and Brett Lee. Kolkata Knight Riders is the fourth team to appoint new captain for IPL 4. Followed by Adam Gilchrist for Kings XI Punjab, Indi Commandos by Mahela Jayawardene and Virender Sehwag has reclaimed the captaincy of Delhi Daredevils.
