Having been drenched by overnight rain, the pitch condition at VCA, Nagpur turned bowling side. Had Ponting guessed it correctly? Well, it seems the Australian skipper’s decision to bowl has fared well, as the New Zealanders struggled in facing Lee, Tait and Johnson’s pace attack.
Australia, restricted New Zealand just for 206 in 46 over’s gaining an advantage to go forth into the quarter finals without a delay. Johnson with 4 wickets and Tait with 3 wickets crushed NZ batting line up under just 206 runs.
Adorning the batting field, Australia with a strong effort from openers has scored 207 in 34 over’s to lift the Chappell-Hadlee trophy.
Having 207 runs target ahead, Kangaroos line up has not changed to open the batting. As usual Watson and Haddin adjusting their gloves and pads have started the chase with a firm foothold.
Watson and Haddin playing almost like a T20 crushed the Kiwis bowling as they picked up 50 runs in just 46 balls with out a loss posing it a good sign for them to clinch a win.
Later, Haddin celebrated his half century followed by lifting Australian score sheet to 100 in 84 balls just after which Watson too picked up his half century.
After giving 133 runs stand for first wicket, just into the second power play, Watson and Haddin combination had to bend down for Bennett in the 18th over following the New Zealanders missed chance of picking up Watson in the 17th over in Vettori’s spell. However, it’s a breath taker for NZ. Haddin went back giving a catch to Frankling, just two balls after which Watson attempted a cross sweep in an ugly manner which took inside edge crashing into the stumps. Even Watson had to see pavilion end after finishing his fifty.
Gaining 2 wicket advantage in just an over propelled the NZ chances of coming into the game again. But Ponting and Clarke with a controlled play defended the NZ bowling. But within no time, Ponting’s anger gave away his wicket, with the impatience Ponting went forward to rally Southee’s delivery to a shot but instead got caught by BB McCullum who stumped him not wasting a single minute.
Later White has joined Clarke and the duo through couple of boundaries gained the innings again into their gloves. The 33rd over has fetched Kangaroos 15 runs which bought them a win much closer.
White’s winning run following a four has made Australia to get Chappell-Hadlee trophy. Australia has won the match by 7 wickets in 34 over’s.
Australia scored 207/4 against 206/10 of New Zealand to win it’s second match in the ICC World Cup 2011 campaign.
