Shahid Afridi is likely to retain the captaincy of Pakistan team for World Cup 2011 scheduled on February 19th in Bangladesh. World Cup is to be hosted in the sub continent nations of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India.
PCB- Pakistan cricket board chairman, Ijaz Butt is keen to go with Misbah-ul-Haq. But after discussing with team management which is in New Zealand and Chief Operating officer of cricket in Lahore, he went with Shahid Afridi.
Currently, Shahid Afridi is leading the team in the ongoing series against the New Zealand. Shahid Afridi is leading in both forms shorter games of T20’s and 50 over matches. Misbah-ul-Haq has led the team successfully in the recent test series against New Zealand. Pakistan went on to win the test series since from 2006. Misbah-ul-Haq captaincy issue is being supported by senior batsmen Younis Khan.
After all discussions with officials and team Ijaz Butt has decided to go with Shahid Afridi. Shoaib Akhtar, Abdul Razzaq and Umar Gul were in favor of Afridi. Ijaz Butt and other officials of the board have lost faith over Afridi as his attitude and violating the rules frequently.
Ijaz Butt is also facing pressure from their team sponsors. All the major sponsors of Pakistan team have started their campaign with Shahid Afridi as Captain and also invested lot of money. The companies have already started lobbying with the government to ensure that Afridi will retain captaincy.
