ICC has ruled out the venue Eden Gardens for the match between India vs England which is scheduled on February 27. ICC inspection team has felt that Eden Gardens will not be ready in time.
Eden Gardens is to host four games in this World Cup, decision yet to be taken to shift the venue for the remaining three games. There are major chances the venue is to be replaced to Delhi, Bangalore and Cuttack.
ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat stated Eden Gardens has not made sufficient improvement for the World Cup matches to be held, but the first game between India and England will be moved away. It was unfortunate the decision must be taken now and it is extremely required.
Eden Gardens is one of the world largest cricket stadiums. This venue has hosted two world cup matches in the past which were held in the sub continent includes 1987 final match and 1996 semi-final. Since then no international match was played expect India and South Africa match. The venue has been modernized by then.
The ICC Committee had provided venues with a cut-off date of 30st November 2010 to complete all construction work and then to be match-ready by 31st December 2010. An additional time was given by the ICC for five venues, which were again inspected the last week. Miserably, Eden Gardens in Kolkata was unable to meet the final time limit date of 25 January 2011.
Eden Gardens is scheduled to host four matches on February 27, March 15, March 18 and March 20.
